In ancient Rome, lavender was sold for 100 denarii per pound, which was about the same as a month's wages for a farm laborer, or fifty haircuts from the local barber. [Wiki]
2,500 (or so) years later, you can enjoy lavender in a style the ancient Romans had yet to invent... In gelato!! And you don't have to throw down a month's pay for it either.
Our organic lavender--yes, organic--comes from the lush farms of Vineland, NJ. And while you may wonder, as I did at first, why we'd even put lavender in gelato. One good taste will answer that question quite beautifully. That's because lavender lends a floral and slightly sweet flavor to the smooth Lancaster County milk we marry it with. And what a sweet marriage it is, truly. Still skeptical? Come get a taste!!
Until then, I leave you with these photos. :)
Dear Capogiro,
ReplyDeleteI will not be trying your new lavender flavored gelato, primarily because I refuse to patronize your business anymore. I recently went to one of your stores to find that you have made you small size half of what it originally was, but are till charging the original $5 price for it. This is extremely disappointing. There is a trend in Philly toward serving small portions--so-called "small plates"--while charging astronomical prices. The primary motivation for this seems to be mere prestige-peddling, and you have shown yourself to be part of this unfortunate and wasteful movement. As a community our goal should be to make city living more--not less--affordable.

Sorry to see you go BUT, food for thought; the temporary cups that we've been using for the last few weeks are actually a bit larger than our standard piccolo cup. We understand that the shape throws people off but we sell our product by weight (You may notice that all of our cafes have handy dandy scales behind the counters that our baristi are trained to scoop equal portions on). So, we're sorry to not be a part of any small plating conspiracies... we just ran out of our cups. Don't worry, the new shipment should be here by Friday (fingers crossed). Grazie!!!
